Fifth and Sixth Classes Visit Cork City Gaol.

The senior classes had a great trip yesterday when we visited Cork City Gaol in Sunday’s Well. As part of our fitness regime in school, we walked to the venue.

In 1806 an Act of Parliament was passed to allow the building of the new Cork City Gaol to replace the old gaol at the North Gate Bridge (where the cinema is now). The site on Sunday’s Well was chosen, its altitude being seen as an advantage for containing “gaol fever”(typhus).

We had wonderful guides who filled us in on the backgrounds of the many prisoners held here. We definitely agreed that life in the 1800s was far harsher than life nowadays.

We had a wonderful trip and ended our day in Fitzgerald’s Park.It was a very informative outing and we are looking forward to our next outing.
