Sixth class set off bright and early this Friday to visit Gougane Barra. We are very grateful to our wonderful Parents’ Association for funding this trip for us. For many of us, it was our first time visiting this beautiful place.
The centrepiece of Gougane Barra is its tranquil lake which mirrors the foliage in the area. We were very taken by the clear waters of the lake where the ripples on the surface caught the morning sunlight creating a sparkling and mesmerising effect. We visited the oratory and the beehive caves where St. Finbarr lived with his monks before they set off for the journey to present day Cork City.
From there we set off on a woodland trail where we saw the source of the River Lee and further on we observed the river as it increased in size and flow as it made its way through the larger river basin. We were very excited to see a deer run through the woodland and we patted the baby goats on the way.
Finally we were treated to a delicious lunch in the hotel before boarding the bus for home. Gougane Barra is a destination that invites us to slow down, immerse ourselves in the beauty of the summer season and appreciate the wonders of the natural world so close to us.
Many of us are going to return here in the near future with our families.
A huge Thank You to the Parents’ Association for this wonderful day out.
