Bealtaine I rang a dó…

Second class was extremely busy throughout the month of May.

They first celebrated Our Mother Mary, by reciting her prayer the Holy Rosary and reading stories about her life. Anna produced this beautiful display to honour Mary. Thanks to Haniel J. for writing the Hail Mary prayer.

When our very special guest Bishop Fintan Gavin, Bishop of Cork and Ross, visited Togher BNS, he was extremely impressed with the boys’ knowledge and reverence. Haniel B. and Haniel J. read The Journey Prayer at our service in the halls, while Ryan and Thomas presented Bishop Gavin with a gift as a keepsake of his time in the school.

A fantastic ‘showbiz’ atmosphere enveloped the entire school as ‘Twist’ fever took hold. Auditions were held, rehearsals got underway, and sweet tunes filled the corridors of Togher BNS. Second class performed “Food Glorious Food” on the night and all their practice paid off! Chloe was so proud of them.

The boys spent lots of time in the church, practising their hymns and prayers for the First Holy Communion, which they received on May 25th.

SNA Anna’s mother kindly sent the boys these beautiful handmade gifts for their special day, all the way from Poland! The Communicans received guardian angels, while the boys of other faiths were gifted wise owls. How special. The boys were thrilled and say “Dziękuję”.

Calvin from Heritage Ireland visited 2nd class and discussed wildlife with them, fielding interesting and intelligent questions from the inquisitive pupils.

They learned all about the varieties of wildlife in Ireland and around the world. Calvin also shared intriguing facts about Biodiversity, which you can read below.

Second class subsequently undertook a ‘Spring Wildlife Safari’ in the local Togher area, with a walk down the Wella and around the school garden. Just look at all the species they observed!

Finally, the boys got the opportunity to be authors and illustrators under the direction of Celina Buckley. Celina is a Cork author/illustrator who reimagined the Irish folktale ‘The Salmon of Knowledge’.

First she chatted to the boys and then read her book to them. which she kindly gifted to the class.

The class was privileged to undertake a workshop with her and produce their own visual and oral versions of the tale. Thomas and Zander came up with very impressive narratives of their own! Well done guys. We definitely have a few budding artists and storytellers in 2nd class!!

After all the school-based learning, we decided to stretch our legs and improve our gross motor skills with a trip to Togher Park. The boys have developed and improved so many of their fundamental movement skills, which were on full display as they climbed, swung, spun and kicked about in the park.

As a treat for all their achievements during the month of May, the boys were awarded Golden Time on the 31st of the month, spending the afternoon playing games in the sunshine! Admirable play skills, such as turn-taking, sharing, including others and fair play were observed and praised…. well done second class!!!!!!

Now we’re excited to see what June will bring!!!
