On a bright and early Tuesday morning, the 3rd Class boys embarked on an exciting school tour to Cobh. Our journey began promptly, departing school by bus at 9am and we arrived in Cobh at 9:30 am. The first stop on our tour was The Titanic Experience, where the boys learned about the rich history of the Titanic and its connection to Cobh, the last port of call for the ill-fated ship. The interactive exhibits and immersive displays captivated everyone’s imagination, bringing history to life in a way that books simply cannot.
Following the Titanic Experience, we hopped on the ferry and made our way to Spike Island also known as “Ireland’s Alcatraz,” Spike Island has a storied past that includes being a monastic settlement, a fortress, and a prison. Here are some fascinating facts about Spike Island:
- Historical Significance: Spike Island has been used for various purposes over the centuries, from a monastic site in the 6th century to a British military fort in the 18th century.
- Largest Prison: In the mid-19th century, it became the largest prison in the world, housing over 2,300 inmates during the Great Famine.
- Military Importance: The island’s strategic location made it an important military site, with extensive fortifications built to defend against potential invasions.

During our time on Spike Island, the boys participated in a full tour, exploring the island’s historical sites and hearing stories from the past. We visited the punishment block, the gun park and the imprisonment cells. The boys also engaged in orienteering activities, which helped them develop their navigation and teamwork skills.
At 1:30 pm, we caught the ferry back to Cobh. After returning, the boys enjoyed a well-deserved lunch and had a fantastic time playing in the local playground. The day was filled with laughter, learning, and lots of fun.
We returned to school by 2:45 pm, with everyone feeling tired but happy from the day’s adventures. It was a memorable day for all, filled with new experiences and knowledge.
A great day of fun was had by all!
