Over the past few weeks, the 5th and 6th class boys have been honing their Olympic handball skills during PE lessons. They have been learning the basics of this new, exciting and fast-paced sport, which combines elements of soccer, basketball, and Gaelic football. The focus has been on developing key skills such as passing, shooting, dribbling, and teamwork, all while learning the essential rules of the game.
On Tuesday, December 3rd, the boys attended a fun Olympic Handball Blitz, organised by Olympic Handball Ireland. It was a fantastic opportunity for the boys to showcase what they’ve learned so far. 5th and 6th class teams both played a total of six games throughout the day, putting their skills to the test in a series of friendly but entertaining matches.
In Olympic handball, teams are made up of five players, and the objective is to score goals by throwing the ball into the opposing team’s net. Players can pass, dribble, and shoot the ball, but they must avoid stepping into the ‘goalkeeper area.’ The game is fast, with constant movement and quick decision-making, making it both challenging and fun for everyone involved. The boys had an amazing time participating in the blitz, learning more about the game and enjoying the camaraderie of friendly competition.
They are now looking forward to the upcoming competitive Schools Blitz in Neptune Stadium which will take place in January, where they will have the chance to put their skills to the ultimate test! Stay tuned for more updates as we continue our journey with Olympic handball in Togher Boys National School!
