In first class, we have been celebrating the season of autumn. We learned about the months of autumn, how the weather changes, the farmer’s harvest, and how nature and animals prepare for the winter.

We went on an autumn walk at the Wella. We studied the various parts of a tree and their functions – roots, trunk, bark, rings, branches, leaves and buds. We noted all the autumnal changes.

THE WELLA WALK

On our return, we noted all the signs of autumn we had observed, and we also recorded how we had used our five senses!

We also labelled the parts of a tree and had fun doing a leaves wordsearch!

SCIENCE EXPERIMENT: CAPILLARY ACTION
We were fascinated by how big the roots of some trees were on our walk. Once we learned that roots have the important job of soaking up water and nutrients from the ground to the tree, we set about predicting, testing, observing and recording the process.

ENGLISH
We picked autumn as our weekly oral language topic and learned lots of new vocabulary such as deciduous, migration and hibernation. We recorded these in our vocab notebooks and used them to write independently about autumn at the end of the week.

ART
Finally, we used the colourful crunchy leaves collected on our autumn walk for leaf art. Having learned about Leonardo da Vinci and his portraits and self-portraits, we mixed colours to create our own self-portraits and used the leaves as hair! We hope you like them!!!!
