We are fast becoming phonics experts in first class. Every week we write all the words we can think of from that week in our phonics copies. We are hoping to create a school record!

Many of us are now reading novels and the comprehension strategy we have been working on is PREDICTION. We even predict a story before we open the book – from the cover and title alone.

We also enjoy doing book reviews after we have finished a book. Our classmates can then check our reviews to see if we recommend a particular book from the class library!

The writing genre we have been working on this term is called RECOUNT. This means retelling events that have already happened or retelling a story. We wrote recounts of our last birthday party and our morning routine.

Our vocabulary last week was based on Fairytales. We read the story of The Little Red Hen and had fun acting out the characters. We then planned a recount and wrote it in the order it happened. The poor hen!!!

Our grammar is also improving as we learn when to use capital letters, full stops and question marks. We never realised that capitals were required in so many instances. Teacher put up this display to help us remember!

Finally, we learned a lovely poem about autumn. We put actions to it and once we had practised several times and felt confident, we performed it for Mr Donnellan’s boys in Senior Infants. They were really impressed!
