Although Thanksgiving is traditionally an American holiday, our class in TBNS had a wonderful time learning about it and celebrating it this year! Inspired by Cillian’s love of America and with a special visit from Miss Schaad who is currently on placement in our school from America, we decided to bring the USA to Ireland and have our own celebration. We discovered that Thanksgiving is all about gratitude, community, and sharing—values that mirror our own school values of excellence, nurturing, welcome, service, success, flourishing, and kindness.
We explored the history of Thanksgiving and how it began as a harvest celebration. Students learned about the first Thanksgiving feast and how traditions have changed over time. We each said something we were ‘thankful’ for and then had some turkey and mash and watched the famous ‘Macys Thanksgiving Parade’. Our favourite part though…….tasting all the American ‘candy’ of course!
Even though Thanksgiving isn’t a national holiday here, taking time to appreciate what we have and what truly matters was very meaningful. Celebrating it reminded us that gratitude is universal—and worth practising every day and we try our best to live this out in our day to day lives and in our school community.
