3rd Class make St. Brigid’s Day Crosses

Ms Mc Gloin’s class enjoyed celebrating St Brigid’s Day by making traditional St Brigid’s crosses. They worked carefully with the rushes and were very proud of their finished crosses.

This week we spent time learning about St Brigid and why she is such an important figure in Irish history and culture. The boys learned that St Brigid is one of the patron saints of Ireland. She was known for her kindness, generosity, and care for those in need. We discussed how these qualities are still important today and how they connect with our school value of kindness.

We also talked about how St Brigid’s Day marks the beginning of spring and is closely linked with nature, new life, and hope. It reminds us of fresh starts and the importance of caring for one another, just as St Brigid did.

Traditionally, people believed that hanging a St Brigid’s cross over the door, in the kitchen, or near the hearth would protect the home and everyone living in it from harm, fire, and illness. The cross was also seen as a blessing for the year ahead, especially for the family, the farm, and animals.
