4th class remember Joe Murphy. A War of Independence hero from Togher

In these years of commemoration regarding the War of Independence, we have been learning and researching many aspects of its history. Many Cork men such as Tomás McCurtain, Terence McSwiney and Tom Barry were centrally involved in this conflict. Joe Murphy was a volunteer from Togher who died on hunger strike in Cork Prison in 1920.

We were so lucky to welcome Joe Murphy’s grand niece, Shirley Kelleher to the school to speak to 4th class. The boys were enthralled as Shirley brought Joe’s story to life. They were extremely impressed by the courage and determination showed by a fellow Togher man. We are so grateful to Shirley for sharing her family’s proud story with us.
