Both 4th classes recently walked to St Finbarr’s cemetery in Glasheen. This is Cork’s biggest cemetery and one of it’s most historic. Of particular interest to the classes was the Republican plot from the War of Independence, a period in history that we have looked at in-depth this year. This plot contains the resting places of Terence McSweeney and Tomás McCurtain as well as many more notable figures from the time including Togher’s own Joesph Murphy who died on hunger strike in 1920. Tom Barry is also buried in a plot nearby. Once again, the boys had a fantastic day out in the sunshine learning about our local history
